How to Model an easy Lego Head in Maya 2016.

How To Model a Lego Figure Head in Maya 2016

Hi everyone, this tutorial is modeling a Lego character's head in Maya 2016. It is quite a beginner lesson for those who are starting out wih modeling.

First off, grab a cylinder polygon form the shelf. Adjust it to size as required, then you will need to do some adjustments in the channel box. Select your polygon as object mode and adjust the Subdivisions Axis to 12 (or as desired) the Subdivisions Height to 6 (or as desired) and finally the Subdivisions Caps to 3 or so.

Now select the tools menu and make sure the symmetry tool is selected and on Y axis mode. Next select your object in face mode and select the two inner face rings on the cap of the polygon. Both top and bottom of the model should be selected.

Use the extrude tool and extrude in with the scale tool, and up with the move tool to make the nub on the top and bottom of the Lego. next extrude down with the move tool to finish the inner of the nub.

You can extrude some extra lines near the corners, as I did in the video, or you can go back and use the insert edge loop tool, as I also did. Adding the two edges surrounding the corner allows the edge to look harder.

I hope you enjoyed the tutorial.

3D Character Animations

Crooked Grind Animation

Skateboarding Animation

I did this animation by the "straight ahead animation" method, which means, animating from the beginning to the end with as much detail as possible. I did end up going back and doing a few finishing passes on it, but it wasn't a pose to pose (blocking, blocking +, spline, finishing) animation. I found this way of animation was better for some reason on this project, but I do usually do my pose to pose animation when starting. As for the overall feel of this animation? I think it's good... Maybe the kickflip at the end could be a little quicker.

"Are you a pothead?" Animation

3D Character Animation

In this animated video, I have taken an audio clip from the movie Meet the Fockers, and used the Morpheus and Elevin (?) rigs, just to give me a little more character animation practice. My animation was to focus on a more natural or organic feel for the characters, though they are still a little bit stiff and jumpy. I stopped short on this animation I feel, I could have made it a little smoother, but, I would like to start another animation project.
See ya then! "Are you a pothead?"

Deceiving Squirrel Animation

3D Squirrel Animation

This was my first ever animation entry to the 11 Second Club animation competition. I can only do animation in my free time, and with a full time job, a wife and three kids, my animation time slot is hard to come by. None the less, over a month I spent around 25 to 30 hours on the animation, which wasn't really enough. I thought I would get a better rating for it, but I will take the 150th place out of 197 animations. I do appreciate all of the tips and advice from the other animators, they will help me further my technique in animation.

Drunk Fox Character Animation

Fox Character Animation

This was the first animation I
worked on for the 11 Second Club competition. Unfortunately, a few days before rendering my animation and submitting my animation, my computer decided to die on me, so, I had to wait a couple of weeks before I could actually render it. All in all, I am proud of this animation. I feel I spent more time on this animation compared to the one above. What seemed to be really ironic, was the animation that won the competition that month, was the exact same scene with a rabbit instead of a fox, though it was done in 2d animation I believe. Oh well, another animation that gave me more practice.
I actually sent this to an animation studio and the response was "Has this been done in MoCap?" At the time, having no experience in the animation industry and never doing MoCap animation, I had no idea what he was talking about. I quickly researched it before I replied. After the initial question he then stated "Thats good if it is!" This was done by pure keyframe animation, so, that being said, what do you think he meant by that? Good, like, it's a good animation, or good, like, it needs some finalizing after the mocap? Let me know what you think.

3D Lego Animations

Lego Walking Dead Animation

Lego - The Walking Dead Animation

Season 5 spoiler of The Walking Dead? Do Rick or Darrell die in this episode of The Walking Dead - Lego Edition? Could this be a prediction into the next season? Not really, just an animation I made promoting three favourite things of mine, Lego, The Walking Dead and 3D animation. This animation short was made entirely by me, besides the making of the textures and sound effects. I modeled the Lego character (and background/props), rigged the model, added the textures, set lighting and rendering and animated my characters in Maya 2013. I then imported the rendered files into After Effects, which is my choice in doing the sound editing. The sound editing was one of the more difficult things I have done, I haven't really added a lot of sound effects into my animations before, just a single audio clip mainly. I added crickets, running, zombie groans, chipmunk talking & door slams to the animation I created to make for a somewhat realistic effect. (I could probably use some fine tuning on the sounds) I hope you enjoy my little animation short, please SUBSCRIBE, LIKE, SHARE, COMMENT, TWEET, etc.. whatever you do, if you like it or not, share so that I will make part 2!!!!

Lego Character Animation

3D Lego Character Animation

An animation of a Lego character saying a line from the tv series "Family Guy"
The animation was done with a Lego character that I have modeled, textured, rigged and animated by myself. The hands were not rigged at this point, but if you watch my Batman Lego animation, you can see that the hands did eventually get rigged.
Animating the characters face was done through blend shape animation and I created the blend shapes by tweaking the UV's in the UV editor. Not the usual way that these characters are animated, but it worked out quite well.

"I'm the Batman" Animation

Batman Lego Animation

This was my first animation of a Lego Batman with an NCloth cape. The NCloth either didn't constrain properly to the character or some of my settings were off, creating a vibrating cape during the animation when the character stands still. The animation itself isn't the greatest, and I should definitely go back and fix this one up.
